Excursion – A city to be discovered – Skopje
Skopje is a settlement which dates back to the period before the Christ and has very long history, today the capital of Macedonia. The ancient name of Skopje was Skupi (meaning eaves, cottages, awning) it was a crossroad for the East, West and South. The river of Vardar – longest and biggest river in the country past through the city and divide the new and the old part of the city, there is fortress and many other cultural and historical monuments and archaeological sites. Skopje is a very interesting attractive tourist destination that you have to visit. Arriving to Skopje you will have the chance to visit the memorial center of Mother Teresa, passing the stone bridge also to walk try the narrow streets and unique old workshops in the authentic Turskish old bazar in Skopje, and to feel the oriental atmosphere.
The old bazaar
With its mix of Byzantine and Ottoman architecture and hundreds of little craftsman shops, it remains one of the biggest and the most colorful centers of its kind. Handicraftsmen like tailors, cobbler, quilt makers, shoe makers, tinsmiths, can still be seen in the market. The place is full with a vivid atmosphere which radiates from the small shops, coffee and tea rooms.
The church of the Holy Salvation
The church contains one of the most beautiful carved wooden iconostases in the world, an early 19th century creation of the famous Mijak school of Macedonian wood carvers. The iconostas is so priceless that no world bank wants to insure it. In the courtyard of the church is situated the grave of the most important Macedonian revolutionary – Goce Delchev.
The city square Macedonia and the Stone Bridge
According to certain data the Stone Bridge was built in the VI-th century, whereas in its present form it was raised upon the old foundation in the time of the Sultan Murat II in the first half of the XV century. With his 12 semicircular arches the bridge represents a significant connection between the new and old part of the city. Placed close to the main city square is the monument of the great humanitarian and Nobel Prize winner – Mother Theresa.
